2026 Sawtooth Sampler Block of the Month Kickoff

We are kicking off this year’s free Block of the Month with a Sawtooth Sampler.  I hope that you are as excited as I am.  This was such a fun quilt to make.  This BOM is definitely a great make for those who are new to quilting.  The blocks are quick makes for those with a busy schedule as well.  I know you because I am you.  Let’s talk about what to expect and some tips and trick along the way. AWQ 2026 Sawtooth Sampler BOM Setting Pattern, Fabric Requirements and Instructions Link to all patterns can be found here QUILT PATTERNS   ♥How does this Block of the Month work? My BOM will run 9 months long.  This will give you plenty of time to have it finished and ready for gifting.  Let’s be honest, we are ready after 9 months to be done with a project.  Month one, January, is the fabric requirements and setting instructions.  This also you to choose your fabrics and start working on the setting units.  The following months, February thru September, will have 2 pattern releases.  All of the patterns will be released on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  These patterns will always be on my website and completely free.   ♥Why the setting instructions first? Have you ever done a BOM before and had to wait yet another month for the setting to come out?  Are you not sure if you will have enough fabric left or do you even like the setting if you don’t see if first?  Those are all things I have heard from fellow quilters when I have joined other BOM sew-a-longs.  I wanted to give you this information first.  This allows you to work a little bit at a time on it, that way when you complete your final block you’re done.  No waiting!!   ♥About the setting? Each pattern you are given each month is for a 6-inch finished block.  These blocks are set inside of a 12-inch finished Sawtooth Star, hence the name Sawtooth Sampler.  6-inch finished blocks are pretty common in the quilting world, so if you done like a certain block, you could swap it for something you do like.  The quilt is also assembled with 3 piece sashing and 9-patch corner stones using an ombre effect.   ♥Talk to me about fabric? If you know me then you know what I say, “Your Quilt, Your Rules”.  Use whatever fabric makes you happy.  This is quilt is definitely a scrap friendly quilt.  In most all of my patterns I offer a coloring page.  You can follow my layout or use your own.  If you want to make the quilt like mine, go for it.  I used fabrics from Tula Pink’s True Colors. True Colors – Cotton Candy Fairy Dust – Background True Colors – On the Grid (all 7 colors) – Sawtooth Stars, Sashing and 9 patches True Colors – Sprinkles (all colors except Waterfall) – Monthly Blocks     ♥Do I need any special notions or knowledge of other quilting techniques? Nope!  This BOM doesn’t need any special rulers, does not contain any FPP or applique.  There is some squaring up of units and pieces such as flying geese, hourglass units and half square triangles.  It is nice to have special rulers to help with that, those can be done with a standard quilting ruler. In my sewing notion collection, I like to use the Trim It – Cute Cuts by Lori Holt for trimming my blocks.  They come in lots of sizes from 2 1/2 inches and up.  Using the solid diagonal lines on them helps with lining up.  The shades 1/4-inch permitter is awesome for fussy cutting.  They are not a must have for this … but I am not going to lie, they are a must have in my ruler collection.     ♥Anything else? If you have questions or need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.  I love quilty talk! I hope that you have fun and enjoy some free quilting patterns.  Happy Quilting!

Rules That I follow in my sewing room

We all have those unspoken rules in out sewing room.  These rules help us to be more efficient.  Rules that I try to follow make my space and quilting journey more enjoyable.  But they are not rules that you have to follow.  Which leads you to my first and the most important rule that you will always hear me say to any quilter, new or old….   ♥Rule One: Your Quilt … Your Rules … Maybe you want to add a larger border or do a scrappy binding.  Maybe you don’t want to make 4 at time flying geese and want to use half square triangles instead.  Or maybe you want to use a different placement of your blocks than what a pattern suggested. Well guess what…It is YOUR QUILT and YOUR RULES!  YOU DO YOU!  At the end of the day, you are the one who has to enjoy the piece you made.  If you are gifting your quilt, chances are the person you are gifting it to is not going to know the difference.   ♥Rule Two: Quilt police are never welcome! After stating Rule One….some people have donned a badge and labeled themselves as self-proclaimed “Quilt Police”.  Well, they are more than welcome to take their magnifying glasses and tape measures and move on.  You are not welcome in my sewing space.  If you want to judge my points and examine how my seams are pressed, please make sure to bring your latest quilt over so I can do the same (but I won’t).  You may not like someone’s color choices or quilting techniques, but whatever works for them and makes them happy, is perfectly fine for me.   I am just happy you are putting metal to the medal and expressing your creative talents.  Now if you are putting the quilt in a show to be judged…well be ready to be judged.  But you will never find judgement here!!   ♥Rule Three: No shoes in my sewing room Yep, I definitely just ruffled some feathers.  “But what if you step on a pin,” some may say.  Well, you walk around your house and outside barefoot and still have the risk of stepping on something sharp. Risk taken here!  I don’t want dirty shoes on my floor where I may be laying out projects.  I want to be able to feel my machine pedal under my feet.  Mostly, I just want to be comfy and hate shoes (and wearing a bra).   ♥Rule Four: If I gift a quilt, I want it used Now would I be totally heartbroken to see if slung over some boxes in the back of a pick-up truck on a rainy day while moving, probably.  At the end of the day though, I gave them the quilt, and it is theirs to do with as they wish. Would I love to see every quilt I give to someone displayed front a center in the living room of their home for the “OMGS”, maybe yes, but I know that is not going to be the case.  Why I really gave them that quilt was to make memories.  I want that quilt taken to a park and had a picnic on.  I would love to come over and see it over some chairs with you little ones laughing in the fort.  I would have zero hurt feeling to see their fury friends curled up on the couch with it napping in the afternoon.  My hope in gifting it to someone is it brings them something of comfort and joy.  I do make sure to give them instructions on how to care for and wash it.   ♥Rule Five:  I starch my fabric Starching fabric is topic all on its own.  Yes? No? When? What kind? How? Why? Here is the shortened version.  Yes, I saturated all of my fabric is Faultless Spray starch before I cut it.  There are lots of pros and cons, I know.  I will not make a quilt if my fabric has not been starched.  I find I have better cutting and piecing results.   Remember my Rule One though …. It is MY QUILT… MY RULES.  You do you boo!   ♥Rule Six: Music must be played Music is a must in my sewing room.  There is a good chance that you will get a very eclectic mix of music from oldies to country to 90s hip hop blasting through my headphones.  It just depends on my mood and what I am creating.  I cannot do quiet and have to have something in the background.  I cannot watch a movie or binge watch new shows either.  I am easily distracted.   ♥Rule Seven: New needle, clean machine Everyone does this different and some don’t change their needle for months.  I follow a schedule on cleaning my machine and changing my needle.  We all invested in our machines, and they need to be taken care of.  I change my needle and clean my machine out every 5 bobbins.  I pre-wind them and this helps me to keep track of where I am at and when I am due.  I mean who is really sitting down and logging hours or days spent on their machine.  Do you know how many sewing hours are left until you need to change yours?  Probably not.  I know how many bobbins away I am.  Find a schedule that works for you and your machine will thank you!   I hope that you enjoyed or giggled at some of my quilting rules that I try to follow.  These are in no means what you have to follow.  They are just what helps me to be productive and enjoy my journey.  Now go clean your machine and change you needle!

Let me tell you a little bit about myself

Well, hello my quilty friends.  I guess I should properly introduce myself.  I mean you are trusting me with your quilty projects right!  Nothing is scarier than sending off something you invested time, money and love into.  It is like sending your child off to college and not knowing anything about what it going to happen to them or who is taking care of them. Crafting has always been a creative outlet for me. Quilting definitely sparked a fire in my soul. I enjoy all steps of the process from putting pen to paper designing a pattern to curling up with a warm cup of coffee sewing on the binding.   Who is Aly? That’s me! The owner of Aly Wilson Quilts.  I may be the sole quilter behind the magic; but it is a family operation.  My amazing husband, Shawn, of over a quarter of a century got the side job he never knew he wanted as my personal assistant and title of “Best Quilty Husband”.  The fact that he knows terms like “Fussy Cut” and can name off quilty designs without ever having sewn a stitch makes my heart happy.  Our team wouldn’t be complete without our amazing teenage daughter.  She likes to stay behind the scenes, pick out and place fabrics and help with laundry so I can balance life.  She is slowly starting to help me with the tech side of things which I am grateful for.   Our family is definitely not complete without of fur babies running around and living their best spoiled life.  My family is everything to me and I am grateful for them each and every day. If running a household and a small quilty business wasn’t enough for me, then I should add that I am also a RN into the mix.  I have been a RN for almost two decades in one of the busiest emergency departments in my area.  Being able to care for people during some of their most vulnerable moments is something I truly value. It’s a job that’s challenging, humbling, and incredibly rewarding and it’s shaped a lot of who I am. Don’t worry I am not all work and no play.  We are a huge travel and camping family.  Packing up our camper and hitting the road is one of our favorite things to do together. Unplugging from everyday life and spending time outdoors with campfires, fresh air, and slower mornings are some of my favorite things.  Nature, a warm cup of coffee and a good book helps you reset for the next busy week. A few fun facts about me? I am a coffee lover. Hot or cold…doesn’t matter to be, as long it has lots of caffeine and taste good! I don’t like shoes. I don’t like buying them and I don’t like wearing them. I am terrified of Chucky Cheese.  I will not step foot in there!! NOPE!! I am a book lover.  I aim to read 75-100 books every year and normally hit my goal. If I am not hording fabric, it is office supplies.  I love me some good notebooks, pens and highlighters.  I am a “Make a list of the list I need to make” girl. My favorite movie of all time is “Willow”.  I could watch it every day and still watch it again the next. Cooking is not a favorite activity of mine.  Now baking, that’s my jam.  I could live on cheesecake and cookies!   That’s me in a small nutshell.  Just a “Small business boss mom”.  I hope that you get a little inspiration from my journey along the way.  This space is a little reflection of my life—family, creativity, and the everyday moments in between. Thanks for stopping by and getting to know me. 💛
